What it Is, Why it Works, and How it Will Make Your Life Better
About the Author
César Augusto Fonticielha De Rose is full professor at the School of Technology of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre, Brazil (PUCRS). He completed his academic training in the area of computer science, more specifically in computer architecture, a subarea that studies the functionality, organization, construction and application of computer systems. Over the past twenty years of his career, he has worked in the training of undergraduate, masters, and doctorate students, and in various administrative roles at the University. As a researcher, he has participated and coordinated several projects with national and international partners, working with companies such as HPE, Dell, and Petrobras.
In this trajectory, he has always been concerned about the impact computers have in research, in learning, and particularly in day-to-day life. He strongly believes that we must have an understanding, at least a rudimentary one, of how these wonderful machines work, so that we can use them more efficiently and they can reach their full potential.
he has always been concerned about the impact computers have in day-to-day life
Because of that, he devoted an important part of his work over the last twenty years to serving as a facilitator. He developed tools to allow more simplified access to technology resources, and translated complex concepts into easier language, allowing even non-technological users to increase their productivity, their professional and social effectiveness, and their satisfaction during leisure time. This facilitation took place not only in the classroom, but also in presentations, public events, and interviews on various media channels.
This book is another step along this path.
About the Book
The term “cloud” is an abbreviation for “cloud computing.” It refers to a different way of using computers, and can have different connotations in different contexts.
Because it is a complex concept offering powerful tools that are revolutionizing the way individuals and corporations use computational resources, and creating opportunities for many new businesses, the word “cloud” has become a popular buzzword in the field of technology. But the true nature and implications of cloud computing are often misunderstood, even by its promoters.
it explains how the ordinary person can take advantage of this powerful tool
The purpose of this booklet is to explain how the cloud emerged, the problems it solves, its limitations, and how the ordinary person can take advantage of this powerful tool to make life better.
By the end of this book, the reader will understand:
Basic notions of computer architecture and networking
History behind the introduction of the personal computer and the Internet
Most common computer terms (lingo) in this context
The notion of computing models and the problems of personal computing
The notion of computing as a service
The cloud computing model and how it improves on personal computing
Limitations and pitfalls of the cloud specially concerning privacy and security
And the reader will be able to:
Make better purchase decisions when buying computers
Solve they own personal computing problems with cloud solution
Better understand how the cloud tools they already use work
Expand their use of cloud tools migrating to this new model of computing
Understand the tradeoffs involved and better decide if its best to buy a powerful computer or rent computational services from the cloud
What to look into when choosing a cloud service
Better understand the privacy and security risks involved in using the cloud and how to better protect their data
